How do we get closer to God’s Word and presence?
How do we get to know God better?
What do we do to live and experience His presence?
These are questions Christians ask constantly. Ok, not only Christians but almost every human being who has ever embarked on a “spiritual quest”.
First, there are two things you need to take into account. These two things are the torch and the sword. But, what do these have to do with knowing God? Well, everything!
You see, God’s presence in your life is like a torch. His presence lights your way and your entire life to guide you through His purpose for you! And, God’s Word is the sword He has given us to fight the enemy and our own obstacles. Isn’t that great?
So let’s go further on these amazing gifts God has given us to know Him better – because He does want us to know Him better and have the best relationship with Him. While we see each one separately, you’ll also start to notice how they are closely related.
In Isaiah 60: 1-3 the Lord tells his people that they are light because He shines on them, and all the World can see it! What’s even better, He says that Peoples, nations and even kings will come to see their bright, radiant light:
“Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see.
For the glory of the Lord rises to shine on you.
Darkness as black as night covers all the nations of the earth,
but the glory of the Lord rises and appears over you.
All nations will come to your light;
mighty kings will come to see your radiance.”
The best part? This promise is also given to you and me.
He turned on His fire and we keep it shining brightly by being close to Him. How do we do this?
By talking to Him and reading His word, the Bible.
This is how he makes us brighter and empowers us as His children. We can also achieve this by coming together with our torches to defeat evil and make a brighter house, neighborhood, community, city, country, and so on until the whole World sees our light and starts longing for it. This light gives us influence on others when they see what it has done to us. They’ll start yearning for that light too! (Be careful with these words and don’t misinterpret them. We yearn for the light, not for the influence we may have on others.)
Remember that the Spirit of God, that raised Jesus from the dead, lives in us (Rom 8: 11) and that’s what we must show the World. Thus, we must yearn for His presence which will bear fruit by giving us influence and authority to inspire others.
Remember also that our true identity is in heaven and the way we show others who we truly are is by being obedient and showing resolve and commitment to be who God says we are. This must burn in our hearts and live permanently with His breath.
We are His messengers, His fire, and His power. Where He breathes, there’s life! The World is full of fear and dread but God calls us not to be afraid. When we decide to believe in Him more than the things that surround us, we grow in faith, strength, and power… because that is what God gives us through Jesus Christ! We become light in this darkened World!
Our heritage in Him is to have permanent company in His presence – and light – to defeat evil.
“And this is what he says to all humanity:
‘The fear of the Lord is true wisdom;
to forsake evil is real understanding.’” (Job 28:28 NLT)
When we acknowledge this, we start seeing the Lord’s plan for us clearer and we recognize our gifts and talents. Because that is what He wants for us; He is light for us so we can shine through our service by using what he has given us abundantly. That’s why it’s so important to understand our purpose, so we can continuously learn and help others be conquerors too.
The Sword, as I said before, is God’s Word for us. It isn’t heavy for the heart or for the mind. It refreshes us and our lives because it guides us too. Besides, it helps us find our purpose more than anything else.
In Ephesians 6:19 Paul asks for guidance that can only be given by God: “And pray for me, too. Ask God to give me the right words so I can boldly explain God’s mysterious plan that the Good News is for Jews and Gentiles alike.” And a few lines before he encourages us to
“take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”. v.17
Remember that Jesus himself told us how important His Word is: “Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.”
His Word is redemption, it opens our minds to better and new understanding, it helps us see the good in every situation or problem. Every answer we may need is there, in His Word. It simply enlightens our lives!
And the best part is that it is in us, within our souls. “The message is very close at hand; it is on your lips and in your heart.” (Romans 10:8). It lives in us and it is part of us.
Also, God promises that whatever we read, hear or learn about His Word will bear the fruit that He wants it to bear. In Isaiah 55:11 He tells us this:
“It is the same with my word.
I send it out, and it always produces fruit.
It will accomplish all I want it to,
and it will prosper everywhere I send it.“
So as you read His Word or talk about it with somebody, you can be certain that it will echo in people’s lives one way or another. God will make sure of this.
That’s why when we read or seek for answers in the Bible, we must obey it even if we don’t understand it (1 John 2:5). Because if we don’t, sin will be rampant and the love of many will grow cold (Matthew 24:12). But if we do seek for it and live up to it, it will restore lives and God will triumph. He will fill us with his heavenly presence and love… that’s how many will turn to Him again.
Our life is an adventure where we help others heal. And the only way we can truly do this is by living holding God’s hand.
- Reading the Bible
- Continue to walk holding His mighty hand
